Halloween – 2017

If nothing else, Halloween can be a really good reason to have a get-together with friends. We had a great time celebrating with some of our good friends.

Halloween – last minute again!

Life has changed quite a lot at Mook & Lulu’s in recent years. I now work full-time, juggling work, school, family and all the other bits and bobs – and mostly everyone ends up where they should be, when they should be there, mostly!

Though, like many working parents, I’m quite often ‘flying by the seat of my pants’ – things get done, but more often than not, rather last minute. So, here is our post for this year – showing us getting ready for our celebrations with friends and a ‘last minute’ easy decoration to try if you’re celebrating Halloween at home this year.

Our ‘Day of the Dead’ pumpkin- expertly carved by Mr Mook & Lulu’s – come back later for a photo of the it illuminated!

So, if you’ve got a spare hour or so, some black wool or string, some drawing pins or nails, and a hammer (depending on your walls), then you could make this giant spiderweb.

Start by cutting lengths of wool or string to make a cross and secure with pins or nails. Create lengths unevenly spaced on top of the cross to make additional cross sections. Then starting from the centre wrap around each of the ‘spokes’ as you reach them and build out in a spiral to form your web – adjust the wool to create the effect you want as you go.

We’ve accessorised our homemade web with a giant spider which we found at Sainsbury’s

Gorgeous Gourds

feature-image-pumpkins

Mr Mook and Lulu enjoys the challenge of carving a pumpkin, and has created some spectacular marvels over the years. This does, of course, set the bar rather high for anyone else in the pumpkin carving stakes – and does make the whole business look somewhat simpler than it is! Pumpkin carving is tricky – very tricky, and if you’re a novice, or have little hands and child-safe tools, it can all prove rather frustrating.

So, here’s an idea for little ones who don’t want to miss out on one of the few chances to play with their food – pumpkin decorating!

We picked up a few of these ‘Munchkins‘ from our local Waitrose, dug out some embellishments and Sharpies from the craft box, and set to work creating our own ‘gorgeous gourds’!

Here is Mook hard a work.

Mook’s Halloween Trailer

My exceptionally talented little Mook has created this spooky trailer for the Mook and Lulu blog – I fear we have already reached the point where my 10 year old daughter is more media savvy than me!

I’m delighted with the her results though! *embarassing proud mum*

Bonne Fete Maman! – Happy Mother’s Day!

IMG_2001

I have seen it said that the French traditionally honour Mother’s Day by presenting their Mamans with cake that looks like a bouquet of flowers – and indeed, why not. So this year, I encourage you to add a little Gallic charm to your Mother’s Day offerings with these florally inspired Mook and Lulu’s Lemon and Blueberry Cupcakes. Of course, the little tulip cupcakes cases go a long way in making your ‘Cake Bouquet’ – but what better reason for the extravagance of some charming cupcake cases than to spoil your Mum.

I first showcased these delightful little cakes in 2014, but I needed very little reason to share these light lemony wisps, complete with zesty buttercream icing with you again…

Ignoring the historical significance, it’s not hard to see the appeal of Halloween for kids. Dressing up in a crazy costume, calling on your neighbours so that they can give you sweet treats, and eating so many sweets that you’re bouncing off the walls – what’s not to love! Last year Lulu declared Halloween as the ‘Best Day Ever’ – for me that title will always be held by Christmas, but Halloween does provide the best opportunity to practice some kitchen alchemy and explore the darker side of your creativity to create some gruesome party food.

Here are some of the Mook and Lulu Halloween offerings for this year.

Father’s Day Breakfast In Bed – with love from Mook & Lulu

Father’s Day Breakfast In Bed – with love from Mook & Lulu

In the moments when I trip, again, over the trainers casually strewn about the floor, or plunge my hand down the back of the sofa to discover the uncomfortable lump under the cushion is a man’s sock, or when I seem to be continuously transporting bottle tops from the kitchen worktop to the bin, the thought of Daddy Mook & Lulu being a pretty fab dad is not foremost on mind.

But, he is a great dad, and Mook and Lulu adore him. When I’m rushing about trying to contend with the fallouts and triumphs of our busy lives, it can be easy to over look that Daddy ML gets up at 6am everyday with our early risers. The hours spent huddled over the table creating Lego masterpieces, with Mook and Lulu, easily slip my mind, and the mountainous challenges for a man outnumbered by females at home weave seamlessly, and unnoticed, into our everyday lives.

So it is only right and proper that we take the time, on Father’s Day, to think about all the things great Dads do and to say thanks – perhaps as a nod to the fact that we really do appreciate them.

In a time where we strive for the new ‘this’, or the best ‘that’, sometimes a simple gesture with a bit of extra thought can be a heartfelt gift. So, here is the Father’s Day Breakfast in Bed – with love from Mook & Lulu. Hearts, a cooked breakfast, and a treat the kids can get involved with – perfect!

Hearts and a cooked breakfast!

Mook’s Bicycle & Scooter Party

Mook's Bicycle & Scooter Party

Mook’s Bicycle & Scooter Party

Birthday Parties can be an expensive business. So this year, when Mook wanted (needed) a new bike, we talked about ways that we could scale back on a birthday party as she was having such an expensive present.

She was very gracious, possibly helped by the fact that we bought the new bike two weeks early, and we all sat down and talked about possible party ideas. Lulu hit on the great idea of having a ‘Bicycle and Scooter Party’ – which went down well with everyone, and so, this year Mook’s Party was a fantastic reminder that simple pleasures can be an absolute delight – and don’t need to cost the earth (literally!).
